Privileging and Assessment

Quality can vary drastically among imaging providers. In our assessments of imaging service providers, we have uncovered poorly trained staff operating imaging equipment, over- and underexposed images, incorrect patient positioning, inadequate equipment and insufficient quality control resulting in poor quality studies.  In addition, we discovered that many physicians do not provide complete interpretations of the imaging studies for the medical record.

MedSolutions believes that every patient undergoing diagnostic imaging deserves a study that meets specific quality standards. We have developed key quality standards consistent with best practice standards in the industry to ensure the best possible imaging provider quality for members under our management. MedSolutions’ privileging and assessment program is designed to assess the quality of all provider imaging services benchmarked against MedSolutions’ proprietary radiology standards to ensure access to the best network of quality providers.

The Assessment Process
All assessments are conducted by a registered radiology technologist and/or certified ultrasonographer.   A physician reviewer is ultimately responsible for the review of the assessment and determination of privileges to be granted.

MedSolutions has full-service capability of conducting reviews on all imaging modalities covered under our radiology management program.  The review process includes a specific review of the provider’s

  • diagnostic imaging equipment,
  • technical staff training,
  • patient safety and convenience,
  • ease of scheduling, and
  • report turnaround time.

JCAHO-Accredited hospitals, AAAHC accredited facilities and practices accredited by AIUM are considered to have met the minimum accepted standards, and are not subject to further review once they have provided appropriate documentation.  All participating physicians are required to be board certified or board eligible unless the privileging committee, in concert with the health plan, makes an exception to this policy.

During MedSolutions’ review process, we ensure that appropriate warnings are posted in the examination rooms for radiology and informed consent documents are signed and maintained in the patient’s medical record.  In the event the provider is not in compliance with the applicable state laws or federal laws governing documentation of informed consent, or notification of risk and side effects, MedSolutions assists the provider in obtaining that information and coming into compliance with those laws.

MedSolutions’ assessment and privileging is designed to meet or exceed healthplan criteria, and is in full compliance with applicable NCQA, state regulatory American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM) and American College of Radiology (ACR) standards.

The Assessment and Privileging process not only offers improved quality for healthplan members, it can decrease imaging costs to the healthplan. Properly implemented and enforced through appropriate claims payment procedures, this program will have a measurable impact on both cost and quality of imaging procedures performed in office-based settings.
